North Inner City Drugs Task Force

Inner City Organisations Network (ICON) has its' roots in over twenty years of community organisation in the North East Inner City. It was formed to bring together all the local projects to fight against increasing local disadvantage and long-term unemployment. ICON work with individuals and families living in the area, local tenants’ groups, community projects and those working in local area.

Community Participation Project: Our aim is to fight against disadvantage and ensure that the voice of the community is heard. We facilitate the involvement of the community in the local decision making structures including NICDTF. We identify and communicate the needs and aspirations of the community to NICDTF in all aspects of drugs use, through community representatives. ICON also coordinate City Clinic Liaison Group. We sustain local participation by supporting community representatives; we developed and promote a strategy to overcome the barriers to community participation – Good Practice Guidelines to Participation. Youth Community Participation & Local Health Action Research have been identified as areas to develop.

Achievements: Up to 200 people have been involved in a series of projects and actions; Youth Participation has worked with young people in conjunction with CTA (Community Technical Aid) through drama to develop an action plan for a youth forum. ICON with Community Action Network is facilitating community involvement in Health Action Research process; 16 people participated in a 6 week training course which led to the development of a community action plan, and a seminar was held in September 2010. ICON ensured that the major community concern about the issues of Head Shops was strongly raised and a number of local seminars were held, this work has contributed to considerable improvement. We have facilitated the Grandparent/ Guardian Support initiative, producing initial information leaflet on available supports.
