Heroin Overdose Alert

Three people have died in Ireland over the past number of days as result of heroin overdose, two were in the Cork region and one in North Dublin City. There have also been a high number of non-fatal overdoses.

Initial reports pointed to a batch of heroin with a higher potency than the street ‘heroin’ generally available. Although full toxicology tests are not yet available there are now indications that the heroin was not 'high-strength', and that not all cases were linked. However these tragic incidences are a reminder to all staff, volunteers and injecting drug users of the need to pay additional attention to harm reduction advice:

Remember - Taking Drugs Is Always A Risk
Don’t Use Heroin
Don’t Inject Heroin (Smoking or Snorting are alternatives)
Never Inject Alone
Keep the Dose Low
Avoid mixing drugs
Avoid mixing drugs and alcohol
Keep Emergency Medical Contacts Details to Hand

If signs of overdose are seen, contact Emergency services immediately.
